The Ministry of Transportation

“Transportation” and “Communication” services were being carried out by two different directorates in the first years of the Republic and these services were transferred to the Ministry of Transportation having established by the order of law 3613 on 27 May 1939.

Following the great improvements in systems and facilities of transportation after the 2nd World War, the existing regulations were updated to meet the requirements and Ministry of Transportation was reorganized and the responsibility area was expanded on 27 June 1945 by the order of association law 4770.

Rapid improvements in transportation and communication services necessitated an increase in the organization of the ministry and auxiliary departments. In parallel the organization and responsibilities of the Ministry was reorganized on 13 December 1983 by the order of decree law 182. Thereafter some clauses were modified on 8 June 1984 by the order of decree law 211.

Considering the benefits of grouping all of the operational authorities under the rule of one ministry, General Directorate of Railways, Harbours and Airports Construction which previously served under the Ministry of Public Works and Settlement, joined the Ministry of Transportation by the order of law 3322 on 19.11.1986.

A new reorganization was established on 17 April 1987 by the order of the law 3348 to meet the requirements in response to the live improvements and the resposibility area was expanded. Following the establishment of the Undersecreteriat of Maritime Services, the maritime affairs responsibility was removed from the Ministry of Transportation.

On 27 November 2002 as issued in the official gazette 24949, the Undersecreteriat of Maritime Services started to work under the Ministry of Transportation and also the General Directorate of Coastal Guard and Ship Rescue having State Economic Enterprise Status, has incorporated to the body of this Ministry.
