Following the proclamation of constitutional monarchy the second railway services are transferred to the administration of Public Works. After the proclamation of the Republic and upon the establishment of Ministry of Public Works by the law 2443 on 26.05.1934 the body is reorganized. Administration of Harbours and Marine Services are also transferred to the Ministry of Public Works in 1938.
By the law 3611 the Authority is transformed into a constructing body rather then a body rendering services on 26.05.1939 and divided into head departments of Railways and Harbours Construction, Structure Construction and Development, Highway and Bridges Construction, Marine Construction.
In accordance with the commitments of the Civil Aviation Treaty concluded in 1945 in Chicago, an international airport is decided to be constructed at Yeşilköy by the order of the government and Ministry of Public Works is authorized for upgrading and extension of all airports according to the international standards and for new airport construction by the law 5367 dated 11.04.1949. Thereafter a Bureau of Airports under Head Department of Highways and Bridges is established.
Ministry of Public Works was authorized for the construction of the military airports following our participation in NATO in 1952 and this Bureau was reorganized by the Ministry before 1954 and named as Directorate of Airport Construction. When this directorate was authorized for the execution of fuel pipe lines in 1956, its name was changed as Airports and Fuel Facilities Construction.
Two separate directorates that were Railways and Harbours Construction and Airports and Fuel Facilities Construction, were joint together by the order of the law 1609 on 13.07.1972 and named as “Railways, Harbours and Airports Construction General Directorate”. This General Directorate is divided into three directorates in 1977 but these were joined together in 1983 by the order of the articles of association of the Ministry of Public Works and Settlement and named as “General Directorate of Railways, Harbours and Airports Construction”. In 1986 this General Directorate started to work under the Ministry of Transportation and still serving under this Ministry.
